2014 Wheels American Thunder box break
2014 Wheels American Thunder - May 2014
THUNDER THUNDER THUNDER
Thunder is back well American Thunder that is. The wheels brand first released in 2003 and made an appearance for five years. While it is back in 2014, it is rebranded as Press Pass American Thunder. Keeping with traditin is an Americana/military themed product.
The base set is made of 70 cards. There are two paralell versions of each card. The b/w numbered to 50 and the yellow numbered to 5.
American Thunder does not skimp out on the insert sets. There are a few. Climbing the ranks, with honors, and top speed. There is also a Richard Petty tribute set that honors the 50th anniversary of his first Daytona 500 win. The HOF continuation set is in this release only and includes one card per inductee for a total of five cards. This is down from the original 10 then 5 and last years 3.
Press Pass has added a hit in every box this year so you get two memorabilia cards and one autograph in every box.
American Thunder is a great looking set. The base cards are sweet and make the most of the limited poses you have available. The brothers in arms cards are actually my favorite within the base. An additional hit in the product makes it a better value and those autographs are limited. We all know the reasoning behind the stickers for one release. The one great thing about them is they are limited this year so even with them being less popular the limited availablity should keep their value up.
The multi color race used pieces look great and the designs of the race used cards were perfect.
Richard Petty is an ICON in this sport and there are going to be those that say he should stay in the legends releases only. I disagree and found the Petty cards to be really cool and a well deserved honor. I am dissapointed that the HOF continuation set has been slimmed down to one card per inductee. However I am glad they have continued it for this year and hope to see it back again in 2015.
This relase is great and I think collectors will be very pleased. I however would have liked to see a bigger military prescence within the set. Something similar to stealth a couple of years back would have been great. Personnally I would like to see split cards that feature the driver or their car and a piece of military equipment. Maybe put the haulers on cards with air craft carriers or huge c 130s. Have the owners in the set as generals and admirals. Something to really incorporate the miltary within the set especially since it releases so close to Memorial day. The 2008 release also included executive cut autographs of the ex presidents. This would have been a nice touch again and adds value to the product. I do realize its probably expensive to do so.
The product deserves an A without a doubt but I would give it a B in execution for my own personal taste. We have two months before redline releases so thats plenty of time to buy more of this product and get all of you needs.
